I made this illustration for Josef Tillmann’s article series ‘Artefacts from the Nomadic comprehensive dictionary for the entry 'coral'.

First I wanted to define the color palette of the illustration. I knew that corals are famous for their richness of color but I wanted to find something more humble, just 3-4 colors. So I found this beautiful photo on a webpage about corals' cardiovascular systems. Then I used Photoshop's eyedropper tool to collect color samples from the photo.
