JARDIN DES FONDERIES - GARDEN OF FOUNDRIES
Sous les nefs restaurées des anciennes Fonderies de l’Atlantique a pris place en 2009, le premier jardin public couvert de Nantes. Conçu par le cabinet Doazan-Hirschberger, ce jardin rassemble des végétaux exotiques, évocateurs des voyages au long court des navires nantais. Ces mêmes navires dont les hélices étaient fabriquées autrefois sur ce site.
Installée en 1908 sur le site, la fonderie des frères Babin- Chevaye, la « Nantaise de fonderies » fabrique à partir des années 20 des hélices et turbines pour la construction navale. C’est ici qu’est inventé l’alliage «Nantial» avec lequel seront fondues les hélices du France, 3e du nom, construit à Saint-Nazaire en 1960. Les crises industrielles successives à partir des années 70 entrainent l’abandon du site en 2001. Il est réaménagé en jardin en 2009. La nef, les fours, le pont roulant et les cuves de moulage, devenues cuves de plantation, sont conservés et restaurés.
Camélias, azalées, rhododendrons et magnolias prennent place en bordure des nefs. Emblématiques de la palette horticole nantaise, ils apportent des touches de couleur dès le début du printemps.
Les palmiers, bananiers et fougères arbustives transportent dans une ambiance tropicale. A leurs côtés, graminées, agaves et cactées évoquent les paysages arides.
Sur la toiture des nefs, on récupère les eaux de pluie stockées dans de grandes cuves qui alimentent le jardin. Le matin, une brumisation apporte l’humidité nécessaire à certains feuillages. Le long des structures métalliques, glycines, passiflores et hortensias grimpants colonisent le métal. Et le soir, le feuillage verdoyant est mis en valeur par un éclairage blanc.
Under the restored naves of the old Atlantic Foundries took place in 2009, the first covered public garden of Nantes. Designed by the Doazan-Hirschberger firm, this garden brings together exotic plants, evocative of the long-haul voyages of Nantes ships. These same ships whose propellers were once manufactured on this site.
Installed in 1908 on the site, the foundry Babin-Chevaye brothers, the "Nantaise foundries" manufactures from the 20s propellers and turbines for shipbuilding. It is here that the alloy "Nantial" with which will be melted the propellers of France, 3rd of the name, built in Saint-Nazaire in 1960. Successive industrial crises from the 70s lead to the abandonment of the site in 2001. It is refitted in garden in 2009. The nave, the ovens, the traveling crane and the molding tanks, become plantation vats, are preserved and restored.
Camellias, azaleas, rhododendrons and magnolias take place at the edge of the naves. Emblematic of the horticultural palette of Nantes, they bring touches of color from the beginning of spring.
Palm trees, banana trees and shrubby ferns transport in a tropical atmosphere. At their side, grasses, agaves and cacti evoke the arid landscapes.
On the roof of the naves, we recover rainwater stored in large tanks that feed the garden. In the morning, misting brings the necessary humidity to certain foliage. Along the metal structures, wisteria, passiflora and climbing hydrangeas colonize the metal. And in the evening, the green foliage is highlighted by white lighting.
