Harald - Bluetooth Speaker
The aim of the speaker's design was to portray my personal design style.
I started looking at Japanese inspiration as I have appreciation for Japanese design and visual culture, whether it be anything from automotive design to their architecture, I always have a draw to it.
As the project moved on and the design transformed and moved towards my own design style, I looked back at my own “Centred” project and looked at those forms and styling and how they could be used and developed.
Working through geometric and organic shape ideas I created a shape I felt to be organic and geometric, which consisted of a main tapered cylinder with a sleek shell covering most of the body, I developed this shape to get to the speaker I have created.
I wanted the speaker to look more like a contemporary art work rather than a speaker and have it blend into its environment as more of an art work. The idea being that if a guest where to walk into your home the piece should not sit on a table as a speaker but as art, drawing the guest’s interest and beckoning their interaction, with its function being a surprise, in the same way the speaker should be able to sit in the background of a dinner party providing ambient music.
This project was completed as my final 3rd year project for Product design at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology, I felt the name Harald fitting for the project as this is the name of the Viking King Harald "Bluetooth" Gormsson, whom Bluetooth was named, having been through many sleepless nights and stressful days this project marks the victory of a large part of the adventure that is my life, for me it is the triumphant symbol of the many years of study.
