Brachen Siedlung

Brachen Siedlung
Installation, visual essay, typeface, silkscreen

Brachen Siedlung was a mobile festival which was held at three locations (Nijmegen NL, Duisburg DE, Arnhem NL). It was a part of Ruhr area as Cultural Capital 2010.

With Ruhr in our minds, we asked ourselves the following questions.

How is nature presented to man?
Can a coal landscape covered with snow go along for the Alps?
What effect does the Industrial Revolution have on nature?
Did mankind, through its evolution, make a next nature?
Can a landscape also be mobile these days?

With this in mind another day created a visual essay, in collaboration with Joris Budel, about human made industrial landscapes. To give the whole project a stronger identity, another day created a custom made typeface, inspired by the Ruhr industrial area.

The biggest part of the project was a mobile installation. We transformed an oldschool Nissan Prairie into a mobile factory. The mobile factory produced a lot of smoke (co2 friendly) that was hanging as a cloud over the whole festival. There was a room inside the installation filled with smoke and mysterious music created by Jorg (Lomechanik) where you saw a handmade silhouette of a mountain neon sign .
