PR2: Chromatic Type

chromatic type-in four letters
For this project we were asked to create a 2-color, double-gate fold brochure/poster that celebrates typography and enhances a simple message with a 4-letter word. The 4-letter word would need to include 2 vowels and 2 consonants. The vowels would be vectored art and the consonants would be found imagery. The composition and each letter would need to include line-art and pattern/ornamentation.

For my initial research I made a list of several 4-letter words. I narrowed the list down to words that would spark an idea or image as soon as the word was read. Ultimately, I chose to focus on the word: HIVE.

The vowels were provided to us on a sheet of paper that we were required to scan and then create an exact vector outline of the letterform that could be altered. For the two consonants we were asked to locate 3-dimensional letters in our environment and photograph them. These images were converted in Photoshop to hi-resolution, grayscale and then the background was cut out.
Front Cover: Shows a glimpse of final concept.
I knew immediately that I wanted to incorporate honeycomb as part of my concept. When I think of the word 'HIVE', honey, bees, honeycomb, and beehives all come to mind. I started with the honeycomb and knew it would provide a great pattern for my design. I was able to create honeycomb with varying colors which added a 3-dimensional feel.

For the vowels, I chose to create a 3-dimensional look with a nod to old fashioned wood type. The consonants were given a color and then a vector treatment on the front side to provide more ornamentation and dimension.
Double-Gate Fold: unfolded to show the word 'hive' with the back cover (when folded) shown on top.
I wanted to show movement with the bees, so I incorporated dashed lines which provided a more playful feel to the entire composition.
Double-Gate Fold: unfolded part way to show most of the inside and one page of the outside
The outside of the double-gate fold included drips of honey. The honeycomb was broken up to provide more space and rhythm. One beehive was arranged on both the front and back of the composition to provide more meaning and context.
