For my final design, I decided to depict a ponderosa pine tree on a plain white background. The pine tree embodies Flagstaff in many ways. For example, The city itself is named after a ponderosa pine flagpole made by a scouting party from Boston on July 4, 1876 to celebrate the United States centennial. In addition, much of the early Flagstaff economy was centered around the lumber industry, specifically pin trees. Even today, Flagstaff lies in the middle of the largest contiguous pine forest in the western hemisphere. Next, the pine tree symbolizes how Flagstaff has become a hub for outdoor fanatics who come from all over to hike, ski, mountain bike, rock climb, and run in the beautiful scenery and nature Flagstaff has to offer. Finally, I decided to use a white background in the flag in order to keep with the theme of the current city flag, which consists of the Flagstaff seal on a plain white background.
