Transport mapping (bike, boat, train and bus), carefully crafted in Adobe Illustrator, is my first cartographical love. Here is a selection of maps I’ve produced.
The New Adlestrop Railway Atlas is a map of Britain’s railways, past and present. Currently available as a free PDF work-in-progress, its bright, clear cartography and detailed research has found it a place in the affections of enthusiasts and the rail industry alike. A mobile app is currently in preparation.
Waterways World’s ‘Annual’ comes with a poster wall map – one of the main selling points. It shows all the hire-bases and boatyards on the system by means of a numbered key, together with every lock, key villages, and waterway dimensions.
The Green Travel Map for West Oxfordshire District Council was an instant success and soon exhausted its initial print run. It summarised bus services, cycle routes, and footpaths in the district’s main towns, together with an area-wide overview.
This poster map of Charlbury town centre was produced for display at key points around the town.
The Windrush Bike Project’s cycle map of the eastern Cotswolds recommends favourite bike routes, and shows dedicated cycleways, quiet roads, and cyclable bridleways.
A clear and cheerful leaflet map produced for a nature activity day in Reading organised by Nature Nurture.
This poster map adorns the wall of Charlbury’s Co-op and shows visiting ramblers some of the best walks they can take.
Drawn for the Cotswold Canals Trust, this map summarises restoration activity on the multi-million pound waterway restoration project. (It’s now being updated by project volunteers.) A little-known fact is that the road colours in this were reused for OpenStreetMap’s main cartographic style for many years!
Produced for Heritage magazine, this Harry Beck-influenced map shows “the other underground” – London’s buried rivers, lost tube lines and underground culverts. Another tube-style map I drew, showing London’s canals and rivers, was praised as “a most delightful map” in Sir Terry Farrell’s Shaping London.
