Sir Isaac Newton
Born 25 December 1642, in Woolsthorpe, Lincolnshire, England.
Died 20 March 1727.
English Physicist and Mathematician.
What was he like?
Sir Isaac Newton was an extremely gifted, and talented Mathematician and Physicist. He was an introverted, and insecure individual. These emotional conditions were due to a variety of factors; ranging from his father’s early death, his mother abandoning him with his grandma, and countless nervous breakdowns from lack of sleep. He showed, however, that he was capable of kind acts, in his later years.
What did he do?
Three Laws of Motion: Philosophiæ Naturalis Principia Mathematica
- Inertia
- Acceleration is produced when a force acts on a mass.
- For every action, there is an equal but opposite reaction.
Universal Gravitation: every point mass attracts every single point mass by a force pointing along the line intersecting both points.
He also predicted that the Earth was shaped as an “oblate spheroid”
Optics – colour is the result of objects interacting with already-coloured light rather than objects generating the colour themselves.
