Urban Planning Strategies
City of Tents
* This strategy takes its conceptual image from the origins of the city formation when Amr Ibn Al-'As told his soldiers to pitch their tents around his, giving his new capital city its name, Miṣr al-Fusṭāṭ, translated as "City of the tents".
* The strategy targets Al-Fustat community to be an open walkable museum, utilizing the slums areas to be renovated into a vast exposition displaying exhibits from the nucleus of the Islamic city in Egypt. The strategy is supplied with complementary pivot ideas as the following:
- Touristic commerce zone of souvenirs, bazars and retail shops.
- Heritage school educating people on their identity and culture. Also, helps in reviving local crafts.
- Science park, in collaboration with the heritage school, will help explore the fossils excavation area and expand the exposition.
* The strategy aims that the whole city of Al-Fustat becomes an integrated compelling experience.
Floating City of Al-Fustat
* A radical strategy targeting the wider picture of utilizing the nile for touristic trips. It aims to design a primary path on which lies diverse points of interest. Concerning Al-Fustat city, the journey would start with entering through the port/gate into a welcoming area and hotels overlooking the Nile for accommodation. Visitors' needs are served through the regulated mixed use plots. Next, tourists start visiting key locations such as Coptic Cairo, Amr Ibn El 'as mosque and the crafts center. The cultural trip is cooled off for a break at the recreational part of town where tourists can enjoy some entertainment at the cafes platform and Al-Fustat garden. then again, be able to resume the educating visit through the civilization museum, galleries, and exhibitions. The trip ends at a resort overlooking Ain El-Sira lake for a temporary stay in order to proceed later with visiting other parts of Old Cairo.
Traditional Planning
* A typical conservative strategy that tries to provide services and compensate for the needs of the community. For instance, replacing buildings in bad conditions with unavailable service and regulating mixed use areas. In addition to adding some crucial land use such as a complex for local crafts and a youth center. The strategy also renovates the scattered malfunctioning inoperative plots into larger projects such as the expositions and and the amusement park.
