Founder Jason McKoy participated in the Dream City Art Walk show as one of the 40 artists in the pop-up group show that took place across 13 venues in Wilkinsburg. He created a piece called Wolf of Wilkinsburg: one large work of art screen printed over 12 t-shirts which was then laid out and pieced together on a platform.
"The idea came from a conversation I was having on a friend's porch about regional mythologies and urban legends like The Jersey Devil, Slender Man, and Cropsey. We went back and forth about what Wilkinsburg's boogeyman would be and we came up with this concept of a supernatural wolf that inhabited one of the many vacant properties around Wilkinsburg during the day, and prowled the streets at night. We laughed it off initially, until 20 minutes later we saw this lupine-like creature trot down the alley in front of us and vanish into the tall grass of a vacant lot and we were like, "Holy $#¡÷!"
The artwork, which was exhibited at Modesto Studios in Wilkinsburg, was an interactive screen printing workshop where you got to choose a t-shirt/section of the piece and "tag" it with a Wolf of Wilkinsburglogo. Patrons were walked through the screen printing process and then got to first screen print a postcard as a test run before screen printing the tag on the t-shirt they purchased.
"I knew that I wanted to do a something that involved community and go back to my roots as an illustrating screen printer. I came up with the idea to make this huge mega wall of t-shirts with one gigantic all-over graphic print. When you buy a WoW t-shirt, you become part of the Wolfpack of Wilkinsburg. I hope that people can then come together wearing the shirts and try to piece themselves back together because, like a community, the whole is greater than the sum of it's parts."
