Glass packaging for vegan milk

About the project:
In an association between the Federal University of Pernambuco and the multinational glass manufacturer Owens Illinois, we where asked to work in groups of 3 on the conception and design of a new product and its glass packaging, plus a marketing project. We had the opportunity to visit one of the biggest industrial parks of the company, located in Recife- Brazil, and have a close look on the massive production of glass bottles happening there. We where free to come up with our own idea of product, choosing between food and beverage, and at the end, a prototype was built with a 3D printer. A deep market survey was made, we looked up the competitions offers, the visual language of the category and an online pole made specially for the occasion.

About the concept & packaging:
After discussions and brainstorming, we came up with Trilê, a 100% plant based milk, bottled in flint glass with a subscription sales method.
The vegan market is rising substantially all round the globe and we wanted to keep up with this tendency, offering 3 flavors: almond milk, cashew nut and sesame. Due to its really simple and pure composition, Trilê is free of gluten, lactose and preserving agents and can replace animal milk in all circumstances.
The packaging was designed to match our sales method. From the 1885’s to around 1960 milk was sold door by door in classic glass bottles, for there was no easy access to refrigeration at the time. After that, glass bottles where massively replaced by plastic and tetrapack packaging, a cheaper but harmful for the environment solution.
Glass is much more hygienic for it can be hermetically sealed, and Eco-friendly, for it can be easily recycled and even reused. And that’s what its proposed with our subscription sale method, where the client picks beforehand the flavor, the amount of bottles and the day of delivery, and hands back the empty bottles in the next delivery so they can be reused.
That being said, the bottles where not design to be displayed in a supermarket shelf but to be delivered at home, individually protected with a tote bag, including a tag with the client’s name. The bottle’s capacity is of 75cl. It has a triangular base that makes reference to the 3 flavors, and rounded corners that help keep a link with the vintage milk bottles but still making it modern. The logo is printed in serigraphy. Therefor, the product counts with no plastic on its packaging and little waste in its production, plus a really personalized service to conquer the client’s appreciation. It’s milk as you’ve never seen before.
