Casablanca Sustainable Market

Competition entry with Zsófia Hargitay and Tamás Butora at StudioA4

Inspiration

The design of the contemporary market place is inspired by the suspended and hanging community-designed shading structures seen on traditional moroccan bazaar streets.

Location

The scaffolding-like building lets the traffic flow through the arcade-like market place. Lively commerce on the square and the ground floor, peaceful conversations on the terraces.

Solution

The triangle of the site is in contact with its broader environment as the rope structure integrates the neighbouring houses. The structure weighs about 2 tons and hangs on the strengthened framework of the buildings. The grey-water of the market irrigates the park in front of the school and the stalls transform into dining tables and a stage in the evening. The new market facilitates the start-up of restaurants and shops in the premises of the surrounding buildings.
program: 250 m2 covered service area, suspended shading system for the whole area, rain protection for each market stall
