2019 MAAS Architecture Commission Application
Project: Competitors are invited to activate the Powerhouse Museum’s forecourt with a temporary installation or structure that will bring the space to life. The forecourt offers a unique opportunity for high visibility through museum visitation and heavy traffic along Harris Street.
Proposal: Back in the 19th century, the hills hoist was iconic of the Australian backyard where families enjoyed their time together. Our plan is to capture Australian design and invention whilst tapping into a sense of nostalgia.
For the ten days of the design festival, we will bring our guests back to a traditional Australian backyard situated out the front of the museum. Giving modern families the opportunity to spend their family time in our Powerhouse Museum backyard.
The design is a Hills Hoist swing set. The hills hoist is iconic of Australian invention. The swing set behaves differently as it has the ability to rotate, providing opportunity for novelty and fun.
