    Fictitious is an adjective that is used to describe something that is not real or true, has been fabricated or imagined or it denotes imaginary characters and events found in fiction. Desi is a noun used to refer to a person of Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Nepali or Sri Lankan origin. So what I mean by fictitious desis is a fabrication of a character of Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Nepali or Sri Lankan origin in fiction, more specifically film and television, which is often inauthentic. I, myself, am a desi from New Delhi, India. I am in my junior year of Graphic Design at RISD in Providence Rhode Island and my occasional brushes with people’s stereotypical impressions of South Asians make me cringe a little. So here I am trying to figure out how such stereotypes came to be and how might they be resolved.
