2. Principles of Grouping

PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Design a series of four visual exercises that demonstrate the design principles listed below. Each composition should effectively and imaginatively demonstrate visual unity using one of the following principles:

Continuance

Proximity

Similarity

Closure

Each plate must use similar picture elements and stand on its own compositionally. There should also be continuance of “flow” between each plate.

OBJECTIVES
• To become sensitive to the picture plane as a 2-dimensional spatial field and the picture frame as the boundary containing the image.

• To become aware of the necessity of an underlying organization of all the pictorial elements that are part of any composition and the principles that guide that organization.

• To consider and explore various methods, media and craft techniques (traditional and electronic) to create an effective solution and presentation of this project.
Similarity in Gestalt Theory of Grouping says that objects that are visually similar to each other usually are perceived as a unified group. (Being similar in numerous ways, such as, color, size, orientation, etc.)
Proximity in Gestalt states that elements that are close together tend to become a unified group. (Objects close to one another get grouped together, while objects far apart do not get grouped).
Continuance holds the viewers attention in a way that objects meld together forming one long, uninterrupted object.
Closure in Gestalt refers to people seeing full/complete objects even though they are looking at an incomplete object. People tend to mentally fill in gaps/close spaces to form  a solid, more stable object.
