With matches: (Yann also suggested it).
There is actually a video I saw in FB of sculptures done in matches (and set on fire):
Lyon, 19/09/2018
Well I suppose we don't have to set it on fire.
It might be a challenge to put the matches into the frame to start with (maybe have to alternate rows with the phosphory bit in front / back.
It might also be a challenge to push the subjects face through without everything falling out. We'd have to do it gradually, which brought me to the other idea:
Do a time-lapse of the process. Starting with a plane of matches, then the nose pushing through, then the face appearing gradually.
Rakasta!!!
I went to a hardware shop and found small rods (in between the diameter of a match and of that of a pencil). This would cost a bit (between €50 and 100) but the rods could be painted (say white with a coloured tip).
Also in my shopping / scouting for ideas expedition I came across some cotton buds... thought the resulting sculpture would be a bit boring (certainly not very photogenic). Until I got the idea of...
PROJECTING ONTO IT
the portrait of the person... or even a video portrait.
