Deconstruction & Reconstruction of Helvetica A 2018

Material Investigation
I created a series of A's by exploring how I can manipulate the materials I used to deconstruct a Helvetia A.  I made some digitally on Adobe InDesign and Adobe Illustrator and some were hand-made with black ink or cutting/shifting a Helvetica A.
To create the hand-made studies I first created stencils but cutting out a Helvetica A and then filled what I wanted on the exposed areas of the stencil before removing the stencil and then adding more to the outside areas.  For example when creating the inked A directly below, I used ink and a brush to outline areas of the A and fill in some spaces of the stencil and then removed the stencil and added the extending strokes.
To create the A below I created a grid over a Helvetica A and then cut and removed some of the little squares to create the open spaces and glues to cut squares around the outside of the A to create a broken pixilated effect.
Similar to the handmade pixilated A from above, I created this digital piece below. I made bigger moves with larger squares to open up the A more which makes it more interesting to look at and less of a Helvetica A.
The A below is my final deconstructed Helvetica A.  To create this I first made a stencil of A Helvetica A and traced lines with two different sizes of marker to create the depth in this piece.  Once I had the base, I put the scanned the image into Adobe Illustrator and made the lines more clear and consistent with the pen tool to end up with this final design.
