Illustrations and cover design to the novel “Ocean at the end of the lane” by Neil Gaiman. The plot of the novel is basically a story which is told by the main character. He turned back to the village where he had grown up. And starts to recall childhood with light sadness and nostalgia. At the beginning his memories seem quite normal, but the further he is recalling, the stranger and odd things starting to appear in the story. It is a curious mix of realistic memories of the everyday life and fantastic elements about magical events, other worlds and monsters. So I devised a special system for my illustrations. I have drawn the "realistic" memories as an old photograph on the faded greenish album pages. And for the “fantastic” memories I created very colorful, dynamic illustration as the opposite to the static monochrome drawings of everyday life.
I tried to make my illustrations suitable and interesting for the younger and adult readers both. Illustrations are done in a mixed technic. The traditional realistic drawings and textures are combined with the computer graphics.
Project consist of 12 illustrations plus layout elements (cover, etc.) I really hope that my pictures could make the journey of the reader even more interesting. Thanks for your attention.
