DXB202 - IMAGE PRODUCTION

Week 8 - Image Manipulation & Compositing
Images 31 - 35

#oneperday18

Objective:
Publish one composite image constructed from at least four original images.
Process: Composite image construction
IMAGE 1
Title:
Dreameria

Technique:
Olympus OM-D E-M10II
 • 14-42@14mm
 • ISO 200, 1/3200, f/3.5

Process:
I thought this flower would be the perfect setting for my image. I reminds me of something out of a Dr. Suess book which I think lends itself to the final image. I used the rule of thirds in the composition of the image, making the flowers and base of the plant the primary focus.

Technique:
Olympus OM-D E-M10II
 • 14-42@14mm
 • ISO 200, 1/250, f/6.3
Lots of dog treats
Bribery

Process:
It took a longtime to achieve this picture and I almost instantly regretted choosing to use an animal in my composite image! It was important that Charlie was looking down for the final image to make sense. This took a lot of bribery, treats, variations in angles and positions to finally arrive at this photo, which appeared to be the best fit.

Jordan

Technique:
Olympus OM-D E-M10II
 • 14-42@14mm
 • ISO 200, 1/250, f/6.3

Process:
As with the previous picture, this took quite a bit of experimentation. I wasn't sure how Jordan was going to sit in the composite image so we tried many variations of poses to arrive at this photo, which worked well with the other elements of the composite.

Title:
Stink Bug

Technique:
Olympus OM-D E-M10II
 • 14-42@14mm
 • ISO 200, 1/250, f/7.1

Process:
As if it wasn't hard enough trying to take a photo of a dog in the exact correct position, I also decided that I wanted a bug in the image. I couldn't find one anywhere! After over an hour of looking I spotted the stink bug and had a very interesting 10 minutes herding it into the light on the balustrade and in a position I was happy with. Madness!

Honey, I shrunk Jordan!

Photoshop

Process:
Using the pen tool in Photoshop I deep etched Charlie, Jordan and the stink bug from their backgrounds. I used adjustment layers, masks and the burn and dodge tool to create consistent shadows and lights throughout the image.

Reflection:
I was pleasantly surprised with the results of this task. It didn't turn out exactly as I has planned though, however this was due to the fact that I couldn't locate a caterpillar (I obviously had unrealistic expectations). Initially I wanted the caterpillar/bug in the spot where Jordan is located and him hiding behind the flowers, hoping to not be spotted. However, due to the fact that the only creature I could find was the stink bug, which did not contrast enough against the dirt to work as I intended. I think the adaptation is probably more successful than my original idea, which demonstrates to me the importance of flexibility within creative projects.
