It wasn’t until my Grandmother passed away that I was able to get to know the man my grandfather was. Whilst cleaning out their home in Castlemaine in preparation for sale, a series of 11 diaries belonging to him were discovered in the cupboard  in the spare bedroom alongside boxes of photographs and slides. Not only do they give valuable insight into what life was like in rural Australia at the time they were written. They detailed his day to day life, reflections on his life and childhood, biographies of his parents and all 13 of his siblings, as well as his innermost thoughts about his then-impending death. These diaries have safeguarded family stories and memories that would have otherwise been lost at the time of my Grandfathers death. Preserving them for the next generation.

I color graded this video to mimic super 8 film, I lowered the shutter speed so the motion of my hands sorting through the photos rougher. I made the footage warmer to reflect nostalgia, by combining this with the faded film effect it also makes the footage seem older.
