Furniture

//BACKGROUND
As I'm writing this, I realize I've had this idea cooking and boiling in my head for almost a year without having the time nor a clear vision of how to approach it. I was thinking: How about utilizing a primitive shape that can be the root of all the framing parts on a piece of furniture? Meaning, using a primitive shape as a ground up shape basis to generate something more complex and interesting. In my mind I had the usage of circles as a base shape, divide it into their respective quadrants and use that as the basis. But I really didn't like the idea of circular shaped legs on a chair design, as I'm personally more drawn towards defined lines. Additionally, I felt it had to be relatively thick legs to pull it off on a structural strength basis, so I wasn't getting any closer.

//3D Experimenting
It wasn't until I started experimenting in CAD (NX for the particularly interested) that I found something worthwile. I knew circular was out of the question for me at the time, so I started exploring different rectangular shapes and ratios. It wasn't until I tried a standing diamond with a 6:5 (Height:Width) ratio that I found myself closer. I still didn't feel like it was right where I wanted it to be, until i tried putting a chamfer on all the diamond edges, and that's when it clicked.

//Basic to complex
From then on it was all about capturing the frame shape I've had in my head for the last year. Particularly the "flower blossom" part in the frame where the seat meets the backrest was a vision that had been stuck in my mind for months. The rest of the shaping was of course a matter of trial and error. Seeing what works and what don't. I decided to go off the triangular/diamond shape for the armrests to break off the strictness a bit. The rest of the frame, however, holds the same cross section all around. Below you can see the concept from all angles, and also how it got the name
Adamantem (Latin; Diamond)

//3D Visualization
I am personally a fan of the Scandinavian design style, and the material choices reflects just that. Below you'll see the material choices I've picked for Adamantem. A light wooden frame in untreated European Oak (alternately beech) accompanied with a dark gray/black woolen seat and backrest.

For specially interested, this was designed & modeled in NX and rendered in KeyShot 8 Beta.
