Project 1 - Principles of Organization/Composition
Our first assignment in Design 2D was to demonstrate the principles of organization, which are: Asymmetrical Balance, Rhythm, Scale, and Emphasis.

For this assignment I focused on the use of shapes and arranged them in a way that could relate to the principles:
Balance (Asymmetrical only): Balance is "a stable state characterized by cancellation of all forces by equal opposing forces" (Tim McCreight, Design Language). In this case, the balance is supposed to be asymmetrical, it looks balanced on one side but overall it is not balanced. I used similar shapes and similar patterns and put them on a side where it looked unnatural on purpose.
Rhythm: Rhythm is "the effect of recurring or repetitious lines, colors, forms, etc." (Tim McCreight, Design Language). Repeating patterns, simply put. I used these pyramids as an example to create a rhythm that goes from positive shape to negative space.
Scale: Scale is "a progressive clarification of size, amount, importance, or rank" (Tim McCreight, Design Language). Scaling an object is just making it big to small, or small to big. I used a ball as the example. As it hits the ground it changes size, and flies into the air at its maximum size.
Emphasis: Emphasis is the "special importance or significance placed upon or imparted to something (Tim McCreight, Design Language). The focal point is the goal being illustrated on this plate. Where is the focal point? If it is the big black dot in the middle of the plate, then that is what I want to achieve. The focal point is the first thing the viewer looks at when they see an image.
