POSTCARD DESIGN Flowers From My Memory
'Flowers From My Memory' is a set of three postcard designs that I printed and illustrated for my South East Asian Arts & Culture class. Each postcard carries a different flower found in the Malaysian/SEA region, and is accompanied by another illustration depicting a scene from a memory I have associated with it.
Bunga Kekwa: Coming from Sabah, the harvest festival celebrations was always a merry event celebrated in anticipation of a good harvest and the Unduk Ngadau pageant. The girls would often wear flowers in their hair, most often chrysanthemums, or 'bunga kekwa'. When we wore our traditional costumes, my mum used to put them in our hair, too.
Bunga Kertas: These pink and purple flowers are common in a lot of Malaysian houses. My dad had several planted in our garden. Ever since he retired, he's spent a lot of his time going to local markets to buy plants and flowers to grow in our front yard. "It's rewarding, and I get to talk to them," he would say.
Bunga Orkid: My maternal grandfather passed away two years ago. My mother loved him dearly, and he and I had some good moments. Towards the end, when he was wheelchair-bound, he would often forget who we were when we came in through the door. He would come around though. Once he remembered, he would smile a toothless grin, laugh, and tell us stories about his life, like he used to when my siblings and I were younger. My mum didn't get to see him when he left. Now, whenever the orchid plant that my dad planted blooms, my mum takes the flower stalks and visits him.
