This book combines Henry David Thoreau’s treatise with the title “On the Duty of Civil Disobedience” with collected images which depict the atrocities of human history or events related to it, and therefore puts the text in a new, modern context.
The images are arranged in a chronological order and lead the reader from the age of slave liberation to the present. For orientation purposes, the beginning of the book shows rough time grids, which give a vague reference to the time period through the size of the respective image (vertical and horizontal formats). A more precise identification is made possible by means of the image description.
At a time when we are inundated with all kinds of information, so called black chapters of history often fall quickly into oblivion and are overwritten with new information. As a support to the subject, the layout and design of the book are handled in an analogous way. The images become visible through heat and disappear again when exposed to cold. The more a topic moves into the past, and in a way cools off, the less it is present in our minds.
Especially today in our fast-moving age I think it is important that the past, thus our history, keeps presence in our heads and is not put in cold storage. This book contributes to keeping memories alive and incites further reflection.
