Mosque in Dubai

The concept for the mosque image is a metaphor for the sun.
After studying the technical assignment of the contest, learning the context and becoming acquainted with the Dubai Creek Tower Plaza, we decided to make the light of the soul our focus. We imagine the sun as a symbol of light and faith that live inside us all; and, similarly, a mosque building is a kind of vessel, being our home where we come with our prayers.
The mosque is inseparable from the central composition of the whole Dubai Creek Harbour area; it is encompassed between the modern area with the highest tower in the world and the Dubai Creek.
We studied the concept of the Dubai Creek Tower and found out that its architect, Santiago Calatrava, used the image of a minaret, i.e., a tower traditionally used for a Muslim call for prayer, as his inspiration, among other things. This fact brought to us the idea of giving up isolated minarets to instead incorporate them into the bulk of the building. This way it would come into a balanced dialogue with the tower. The image of the tower was also inspired by a lily flower bud, symbolized by the thin steel fins that widen towards the bottom. The sun helps the lily to blossom, which also contributes to their dialogue.
The mosque building is symmetrical and is shaped like the sun in plan view. It looks modern and even futuristic from the outside, and relatively simple from the inside. We wanted to tap into the origins of the first mosques, which were built without domes. The sweeping tall building monumentally towers over a human, but it ends with the light.
The immediate site improvements are mainly done on water. The so-called bridges that look like floating water-lilies are attached to the building and connected with the mosque by walk-through exits. The mosque thus becomes accessible from each side, and the tall exits allow people to participate in communal prayers even from the outside.
The water surface beautifully reflects the architecture, making it into one united landscape that, we hope, would be a pleasure to gaze upon.
