My objective for this project was to design a t-shirt logo for the UMCP Taiwanese American Student Association’s annual night market event to help spread Taiwanese culture.
SKETCHES
As you can see from my sketches, I tried many different kinds of designs and ended up using the bottom right one. The reason that I designed a heartbeat with Taiwan because it can relate to a person's life. The "a" that is replaced by a heart with Taiwan's flag on it can symbolize love for Taiwan. People from Taiwan or are passionate about the country would be more interested in the design.
For the second t-shirt design, I tried thinking of all the symbols or objects that can represent Taiwan or Taiwanese culture. I decided to choose the Taiwanese black bear since it is Taiwan's national animal. Just like the American bald eagle, Americans really like their national animal and the Taiwanese would resonate with its black bear. The Taiwanese black bear symbolizes courage and strength. As shown in the photo on the right, I applied many different sizes of circles, lines and shapes to create the bear.
