I've had a privilege of leading a basket weaving workshop for a group of lecturers from Zhengzhou University of Aeronautics. 

My goal was to give a nice introduction to the world of wood with a fun and relaxing activity. Weaving baskets seemed like a good idea. It helps with training spatial imagination. (2D goes into 3D). It also works on many senses: touch, sight, smell and hearning. I choose variety of veneers to use as the thread. This way, the participants could learn about specific types of wood and their characteristics. Veneers were cut into stripes and then soaked in the water. Walnut veneer was the favourite one among the attendants. It is also the one presented on the photos.
