SISIFO: The modern man Illustration Project

My work is based on Sisifo. A character I made based on the Geek myth. I duplicate the ink style and technique in a digital way. Bringing the aesthetic of the traditional ink technique through the creation of my own brushes in digital programs.

Sisifo is my representation of a modern man, the myth in the modern era with the contemporary problems.

Sisifo is a man looking sense in a nonsense life. He cries, he loves, he lives, he dies and more important than all these things. He thinks.

Sisifo has more than one life. He is a simple employee working while the whole universe is moving. He is an activist or militant fighting for freedom of thought. He is a man whose country is in war and this has given him insomnia.

Of course this set of illustrations are just a part of my work with the character and is the representation of a lot of work, as aesthetic as technique. These illustrations get the level of compromise and essence through the study of the modern symbology. And my work with traditional ink which has helped me a lot to make a digital representation.

SISIFO: In the middle of the universe.

Sisifo has a sense he wastes his life in a job he hates. Sisifo feels he is the center of the whole universe, but not as an egocentric way, but a bad one. Sisifo is able to feel the eyes of the whole universe on his back (yes, all the universe on his back). The whole universe. Galaxies and stars seeing how he wastes his life. Feeling the pressure of billions of stars, looking him with a cold look, making him feel guilty of his own existence. It even burns in inside of his body. And Sisifo just keep working, trying to not look back. Because if he looks back, he will face the whole universe and Sisifo is afraid of that. So he will keep working. Day after day.

SISIFO: Do not let it bit you.

Sisifo is one of the few who received a gift from the nature. Sisifo received the conscience.

Sisifo is one of the few who able is to recognize where the injustices are. And even more important than this. Sisifo is able to care about those places where the justice is absent.

Sisifo is the one who supports vulnerable and unprotected groups. Sisifo is one of the few who has the strength and courage among all this "busy" and apathetic society to raise the voice for those who are voiceless.

Sisifo is able to see the social gap and inequality.

Sisifo is one of those who have ever felt the fear climbing up his spine at the moment when an army man is pointing at him with a gun. Sisifo is the one who even with this fear inside his body does not give up and does not take a step back.

Sisifo es one of the few who has been about to break into tears in front of the injustice.

And Sisifo es one of the few who has break into tears when the injustice is too big and its fangs are too sharp.

Sisifo is one of the few who understands because he is one of the many who has been bitten for the oppression and fear.

Sisifo is one of the few among this society who has the courage to raise the voice against the snake that has the oppression within.

Sisifo is one of the few who knows that the injustices that seem far from us are closer than what we ever think.

SISIFO: Could you sleep with a war under your bed?

The nation of Sisifo has declared a war to its neighboring country. Sisifo does not understand a lot about the war, but understands the fear. Sisifo almost can feel the death and hungry under his bed. There under the bed. Just waiting to take him. To show him how the war really is. The war does not sleep and Sisifo have not slept since the call to arms was given. Sisifo has insomnia since then.

Sisifo feels the shake in the earth when the tanks march. Sisifo wonders if these tanks are allies or not. The truth is that inside the mind of Sisifo this does not matter. Sisifo is scared of any tank. Ally or not.

In the inside of his heart, where you all put your deeper fears, Sisifo is scared of any tank under his bed, outside his house, behind his head. Sisifo is scared of any plane warplane throwing missiles to his place of birth. Sisifo is scared that soon will be able to distinguish types and models of tanks and aircraft. Of course if he lives enough time to do this. Sisifo wonders if he wants to live enough to distinguish types and models of tanks and aircraft. Sisifo prays and ask God to end this war. Sisifo always was atheist.

Sisifo is scared of any gun pointing to his head. And Sisifo is even more scared of any gun pointing to the heads of his relatives and friends.

Sisifo feel the war under his bed. Sisifo wonders is anyone could sleep with the war under the bed. Sisifo wonders why this happens to him and Sisifo wonders if someday will be able to sleep again.
