Typography Project 1: "Expressive Type"
For this expressive type project, I was tasked with choosing five words and displaying their meaning through the forms. The objective is to give the viewer a sense of the words meaning without outside imagery- conveying the message simply.  First I was instructed to choose ten words, creating five thumbnail sketches for each, giving a total of fifty. I then created refined sketches of my ten best ideas. I then chose my five best to create in Illustrator, which are the images you see in this post.
The brainstorming aspect of this project was probably the most challenging because it pushed me to exceed my typical idea turn-out which proved difficult given project restrictions. This was highly beneficial to the process though, because I was forced to examine core ideas of the word so that a wide variety of viewers would be able to interpret the meaning. I had to return to the basics and start from there. I found that most of my best ideas were the ones created after I had sketched my first instincts and was left with highly thought through concepts.
The process of creating the finished products was the most enjoyable for myself. The words "late" and "Wandering" were both drawn in illustrator. This was my first time drawing a font. "Swift" was created in illustrator using a combination of Verdana font and drawn elements. "Reflection" was created using Sukhumvit Set font with slight drawn alterations in illustrator. For the word "lush" I used Photoshop to create image filled lettering.
From this project I learned brainstorming tactics and how to navigate the Adobe softwares. I learned new ways to adjust type and also how to create my own. This project has helped me to think of ways to clearly convey messages while still maintaining a cleanness and simplicity. As a designer it is important to realize the significance type has on any design. It's pivotal roll is often overlooked by beginning designers, myself included. This project has already shown me the effectiveness of typography when optimally utilized and I am looking forward to expanding my knowledge and skillset.
