One of the projects I've been working on in the past few months (on and off) is a mock redesign of the Russian news channel RT, which currently has a polished and professional look, but can sometimes appear disjointed due to different designs and typefaces being used in different shows, and the channel's logo has been the same since its inception.

My challenge here was to update the look and logo whilst keeping it unique and allowing it to stand out in the growing media landscape, and to create a look that was able to adjust to different programmes with their own distinctive designs.

The first idea was to take the logo out of its box, which would allow it to interact with the space in a different way and refresh the logo without it becoming unfamiliar to viewers who knew the brand already. I started from the base up and tried to create a lighter look that would still make the most of the on-screen space without feeling too cluttered.

The on-screen logo is now more muted, but is still prominent, and the ticker and time bug have a lighter feel. In addition, a more modern typeface is adopted across the look to create a unified design.

The standard headline graphic has changed from white to green to shift the emphasis towards the stories themselves with any breaking news turning the bar red, and the design also leaves space for another aston to the right, which can show location or details of which show is airing.

Changing emphasis on the colours also means that the channel's graphics are more adaptable to different colour schemes with different shows - in this case IN THE NOW, an opinion programme that uses social media.

Finally, one of the most important issues was to unify the different on-screen typefaces used. This was one of the main factors in my choice of font - I needed something modern yet accessible to viewers, and the look can also be used for full-screen graphics, which RT uses often to illustrate stories.
