Mixed media, woven textiles + materials

These pieces were inspired by Julia Kristeva’s theories on the interiority and exteriority of the body. She writes about the ‘abject’ as a term to describe internal or external bodily functions or features that have been removed from the original context of the body; highlighting that through this process of removal, bodily functions become repulsive and ugly.
However when concealed and ‘censored’ by the layers of skin which contain the body as a whole, these functions are normalised and disguised by the beautiful exterior of the nude body. The piece is recognisably human in form but also unpleasant to look at.
One of these were exhibited in Leeds LS6 cafe alongside my photographs from the 'Page 3' series.
