NUA 2018 BA Degree Show Fine Art student catalogue

Fellow Design for Publishing student, Elena Kidman and I pitched a proposal for this year's Norwich University of the Arts BA Fine Art Degree Show catalogue. We were competing against a handful of other students from the university and were eventually selected to design the catalogue in its entirety.
The overarching theme of the catalogue was the same as the last unit's theme for Fine Art student, "directions". Hence, we used bold lines as instruments to indicate direction, motivation, movement and reaching one's own goals. Throughout the catalogue, the lines connect, weaving the pages together to form a cohesive form of documentation for the 2018 Fine Art graduating class.

As for the format, we decided the catalogue would consist of three formats to differentiate between essays and the students' body of work. We chose to utilise bold colours to make the publication stand out amongst the other Degree Show publications for the university, and the spiral binding was carefully picked so that its green colour would match as closely as possible to the green used throughout the catalogue. In order to bring this publication together, we collaborated with the Fine Art editorial board, to obtain all student work and tutor/guest artists' essays. Our own tutor, Glen Robinson was also a tremendous help in finalising, polishing and eventually setting the files up for professional printing.
Elena and I walked through the studio spaces dedicated to Fine Art students on the NUA campus and decided to use some of the textures and mistakes spotted in the studio's floors, walls, tables, chairs and just about every other surface to signify section breaks. The photographs above were used for the final section break spreads. We agreed with the Editorial Board that the catalogue should be personal and representative specifically of this year's unique graduating class, instead of simply being a well-designed publication.
The poster above was part of our original proposal that never came to fruition. It was a broadsheet we designed using work by students from the previous year. We intended to have the broadsheet, postcards of student work, and the catalogue itself all combined to compose the "publication", but budget-wise, this wasn't feasible, so the catalogue was the only component that remained, as it was the most important.

NOTE: Elena Kidman and I were in charge of the design and layout of the publication only. Student pages contain work done by the student and we do not claim ownership of that work whatsoever.
