Illustrating Contrast

A class project to explore contrast - using any method and any contrast pair. The idea of using animals to illustrate the concept of contrast came from bainstorming contrast pairs - the one chosen was straight/curved; the animals came from having recently browsing Franz Lanting's nature photography. The giraffe and octopus were chosen as examples of straight and curvy animals.

Initial exploration into contrast, using paper samples, acrylic paint and string.
Inspired by the rebranding of Aizone in 2010 by Sagmeister Inc., it was decided to use the background to contrast the shape of the animal.  String was glued onto a board and used to print the straight/curvy design to be used as a background.
The shape of the animals was explored, emphasising the contrast between them.
Final illustration, using the block print pattern on the body of the animal and contrasting with the backgropund.
