INT. FIELDING CLINIC, JESSE’S ROOM - MORNING

ALEX (seventeen) tightly holds Jesse, sitting on the bed.  Jesse drifts in and out of consciousness. Alex is his brother.

Alex is heavy with despair. Nurses peek in and quietly talk to one another.

ALEX

Your mates come to see you?

JESSE

Just Bailey. He’s here almost all

the time.

ALEX

That’s uncharacteristic of him.

JESSE

(heavy sigh)

Yep.

Jesse sluggishly sits up, and shuffles away from him.

JESSE (CONT’D)

Can I come home?

Alex doesn’t respond.

JESSE (CONT’D)

I want to come home. Otherwise I’ll

just break myself out.

ALEX

You mad? You’re not sleeping!

Dad’s still freaking out about how he

found you. He just locks himself

away in the attic with his bloody

turntable. Bony M keeps blasting

every flipping morning... Mum won’t

stop crying.

Jesse retracts, feeling deep guilt, and trying to control his racing heart.

JESSE

Buffie visited. I almost wish she

didn’t.

ALEX

She loves the bones of you.

They sit in silence.

Alex tentative lays his hand on Jesse’s forearm. Jesse flinches from the sting brought on by the self inflicted cuts. Alex is upset. Alex bounces between sadness and anger.

ALEX (CONT’D)

You said you’d try.

JESSE

I am. I need it to escape. It’s

the only way to make the burning

escape.

Alex groans, rubbing his eyes.

SOUND OF CARTS ROLLING UP AND DOWN THE HALLWAY, AND STAFF QUIETLY WHISPERING.

Alex gazes away into space, feeling very anxious. His body is tense.
