Further from our X Canvas show in 2015, Core Design Gallery now presents an added twist to our new show titled Y Canvas.  While X Canvas sought out more avant garde experimentation of materials and its effects on surface, representation, form and presentation of art, Y Canvas aims to investigate the content and production of knowledge within the contemporary art produced in the Malaysian landscape.

As society develops, as the country grows, as Generation Y comes of age…it is undeniable that Generation Y are our future leaders of this grand nation.  Yet Generation Y has undisputedly been labelled as notorious creatives, rule breakers, lazy and self-preoccupied. Even the art that have been recently been produced by our Generation Y artists are criticised for its pure commercial value absent of intellectualism or critical thinking.

Picking up from X Canvas 2015, as a natural succession, Y Canvas stands as a group exhibition that probes and considers the intrinsic value behind the artworks produced by upcoming four emerging Malaysian contemporary artists of Generation Y.

No stranger to the local arts scene, Haafiz Shahimi, a pioneer of pyrography printmaking art, showcases further development to his art.  Finetuning and innovating his art further, his latest artworks The Constant Revival series grants an added air of perfection, duly elevating his more common works that are seemingly drawing-like in nature to the sleekness and intricate qualities of a fine painting.

Renowned for his excellent drawing and painting abilities as well as mixed media works, Haslin Ismail infuses added excitement as he ventures to grant his more common two-dimensional works with three-dimensional effect.  Incorporating elements from his loved comics, Haslin further showcases his dedication and commitment to push the boundaries of his art to exhibit the intricate possibilities of featuring different perspective and narrative onto a single canvas, through a detailed play with grids and mixed media textures.

A master in the genre of collage, Anisa Abdullah sheds a new side to her art as she ventures into monochromatic works coupled with a play of perspectives, that clearly stands out above her more-commonly known works of portraiture and simplistic landscapes.

Attesting clearly to her figurative abilities, Nor Tijan Firdaus joins the pack, alluding to her hopes and aspirations of Generation Y.  As Malaysia comes to a new turning point with the recent election results, Nor Tijan celebrates the progress of Malaysia, paying homage to our current and past leaders, clearly acknowledging their respective contributions albeit their shortcomings.  Granting an uncanny likeness to the renowned portraiture image of our leaders, the contemporaneity of her latest artworks are apparent, featuring pop colours through the more mundanely coloured e-waste materials that she works with.

Male vs female, Y Canvas not only speaks to the progress of our contemporary arts  but too can be seen as a collaborative study into the qualities of Generation Y as well as an interesting face off to how both sexes, in all their positives and negatives, may contribute to the development of the arts for the future.
