DXB202 | Week 2
#oneperday18
This week's task was to document the passing of time. I chose to draw pictures of an ice cream melting.
Melt 1

Technique: Pencil sketch using a range of pencil weights. Stippling, blending, tonal gradation and varying line lengths were used.

Process: I used a range of pencils to create this drawing. First, I used a 6H pencil to draw the basic outline and ensure proportion was correct. Once I was happy with the outline, I began using a B, 2B and 4B pencil to create shading, shape and texture. I worked between the different pencil weights continuously to create highlights and shadows. At the end, I used an eraser to carefully rub out certain parts of the drawing that needed to be more highlighted.

Reflection: I found it quiet difficult to begin with this drawing since I have not practised this technique in years. This is my least favourite of the five drawings, however, I think it turned out okay. I could have improved this by blending the pencil weights together more. Also, I need to work on my ability to show highlights without using an eraser or just leaving a white space.

Reflection: This image is better than the first, but could still do with some improvements. Again, the pencil weights needed to be more fluid in terms of blending. Also, the ice cream part should have been lighter.
Melt 3

Reflection: By the time I got to this third drawing, I felt as though I was improving. I was more used to the techniques and I feel like from this drawing on, you can see the improvement. I particularly like the contrast between the cone and the ice cream drip. Also, the shadow on the ground helps to give context and scale.
Melt 4

Reflection: I think this drawing turned out quiet well. I like the contrast between the cone and the ice cream. Also, I feel as though I utilised the pencil weights more effectively in this drawing. However, the shadow on the ground needed more shadows within.
Melt 5

At the end, I used an eraser to carefully rub out certain parts of the drawing that needed to be more highlighted.

Reflection: No surprise that this is my favourite of all the images. By this last drawing, I had gotten a hang of the technique and I wasn't so hesitant to use dark shading. The contrast in this drawing is effective and the shadow on the ground has more darkness to it. However, to improve this drawing, I should have put more highlights in the centre to help define between cone and ice cream.
