Calligraphy and lettering - designer's workshop

I have often heard that design students should learn calligraphy and lettering. While practicing the writing of the calligraphed letters, several questions popped into my head:

– why is it worth learning calligraphy and lettering?
– what skills (in addition to increased manual skills) does this practice affect?
– does it translate into later professional work as a designer?

Unfortunately, both the curriculum and the publications analysed relating to this topic did not answer the questions posed. Another point in the research process was discussions with various designers on the impact and use of skills acquired with the practice of calligraphy and lettering. These included Veronika Burian, Petra Dočekalová, Cyrus Highsmith, Martin Majoor, Robert Jarzec and Mateusz Machalski.

The result of the discussion and further research work is a book divided into five chapters. The publication is an attempt to answer the question of the meaning and purpose of the practice of calligraphy and lettering, and thus is a proposal to fill the noted gap, i.e. in the publishing market.
