The design of Paris Region buses
Île-de-France Mobilités, is the authority in charge of public transport in the Île-de-France region. It initiated a project to harmonise and standardise its fleet of 10.000 buses, exploited by 70 operators who transport 3 million passengers every day.
Today’s network is heterogeneous both in quality and image. It is the ambition of Île-de-France Mobilités to federate all buses into one unique image, to improve the use perception of the bus mode, to control better the purchasing and maintenance costs and to facilitate inter-operability of vehicles when putting operators in competition.
Île-de-France Mobilités took the initiative to launch a unique approach involving all the operators of the region together with manufacturers.
Île-de-France Mobilités asked Yellow Window to steer the approach as part of a design framework contract. The ambition of the mission of Yellow Window was to define a new design for the region’s bus, design that could be manufactured by different manufacturers and exploited by all operators.
2017 - 2018
Yellow Window analysed the possible leverages to realise the ambition of more homogeneity. This was done through a new dialogue between the mobility policy makers, the operators and the manufacturers.
The role of Yellow Window was in a first time to create the exchanges between all stakeholders, to check with manufacturers on the feasibility of innovations and to create awareness and a buy-in for the opportunities the new approach proposed by Île-de-France Mobilités could create. In parallel, the inputs coming from customers through customers satisfaction studies, surveys and service design assignments done on behalf of the operators was used to bring in insights. Cost elements of interior equipment were also analysed.
It is the combination of all these elements that allowed to develop design guidelines that are pertinent, well balanced, realistic and take into account the investment and maintenance costs.
The new design is a welcoming space where all the details, all the elements are thought taking into account the well-being of the users on the bus.
Two mock-ups were built by the manufacturers Man and Iveco. They were presented at the “Transports Publics 2018”, The European Mobility Exhibition, in Paris.
The design of Paris Region fabrics
Île-de-France Mobilités, the transport authority for the region Ile-de-France, initiated in parallel to a design process for bus, a project to harmonise and standardise the quality of the fabrics used on all the seats of the region’s fleet : bus, trams, metros and trains.
Île-de-France Mobilités asked Yellow Window to steer the approach with the ambition to design a unique fabric that could be produced by various manufacturers.
2017 - 2018
Yellow Window developed a collection with a tone-on-tone pattern that symbolizes the Île-de-France transport network.
A palette of 16 nuances is available which allows to create various interior harmonies, playing with different atmospheres allowing to differentiate the transport modes and to adapt to changing trends.
The creation and the use of one single type of fabric on all the seats of the fleet of the region will allow to harmonise in a lively way the regional identity, to improve and standardise the quality of the fabric, key element of passenger comfort and at the same time allowing to be economically more efficient.
