STORY Levitating Timepiece App Design
About The Product
STORY offers a fresh perspective of looking at time. It’s a timepiece with a traveling levitating sphere, which gives us an opportunity to express everyone’s most precious resource in unique ways.
When mounted on a wall there is nothing directly above or below the sphere as is usually the case with magnetic levitation. The sphere floats and travels through the air off the side of the clock seemingly defying gravity.
STORY has a great minimalist industrial design esthetic and it was a pleasure to work on the design of the digital experience. Some of the more visual parts of the process of representing the timepiece within the context of the apps are shown below.
Virtual Representation of STORY
App concept to show how the backlight, the clock are at different elevations. Idea to use parallax effects in the actual apps to achieve the 3D illusion (initial release of apps have just the 2d representation).
There are three components through which STORY controls what it displays: a sixty LED backlight, a front-display matrix and the travelling levitating sphere. The home screen of the app has a digital representation of the clock that mirrors the actual product and users are able to control to set them within the context of carefully considered modes that STORY offers.
.
STORY Modes
Clock, timer and journey modes ⏰ ⏱ ⏳. When on clock mode, for example, you can set the front display to show 24h time, have the sphere indicate the minutes and have the backlight set to the show the moon phase.
Journey Mode
The "Clock" and "Timer" modes are concepts that people are already familiar. Journey mode is more unique. It allows users to set STORY to do one revolution over a specified period with a start date and end date. It can be as short as a few minutes or you can have one journey last multiple years. Maybe you want it to count down the time to your marathon or if you're pursuing a four-year degree maybe set it for the duration until you graduate.
Showing STORY towards the beginning of a Journey on the left and when the Journey is at ~90% completed on the right. In this case, not just the sphere but also the backlight is set to follow the Journey.
Full Screen View
You can also hide away the complexity of all the other UI elements of the app so that the whole screen is just the virtual timepiece.
.
Showing the design of the full screen view on both smartphones and tablets. You can set the backlight to be the hour, minute or second indicator independently of the sphere.
