HANDICAPS (Typeface / Book Title)

Around the title of a book, Casualties of War, I worked on lettering that I called "Handicaps" (for lack of a better name…). Like the people whose stories are told in the book, the letters are disfigured and missing one or several limbs. After removing certain parts, I also rounded the severed edges, the way mutilated bodies eventually heal, no matter what.
Typographers have worked around similar shapes. In this take, I favored visual discomfort; imbalance and dissymmetry.
