Chance Encounter on the Tiber was the pilot for an urban revitalization plan combined with a musical performance composed expressly for outdoor public space. The project turned the walkway along the Tiber River in the center of Rome into a vibrant social open space by focusing on two simple means: movable seating and musical performance.
On May 31, 2010, one hundred red movable chairs were placed along the Tiber and there were 30-minute musical performances by American soprano Susan Narucki, Brooklyn Rider String Quartet from New York, and the local Blue Chamber Orchestra of Chance Encounter, co-conceived by Bielawa and Narucki and composed by Bielawa expressly for outdoor public space. On Sunday May 30, as part of the opening weekend of MAXXI, there were two preview performances of the project at the museum.
