Deven Knapp is a 2018 graduate of the Photo Media program. She is primarily a documentary photographer who focuses on time and the beauty of everyday objects.
Her work, Passing Roots, began as an idea she explored in 2015 in her Photo 101 class with Professor Mike Sinclair. She documented the small town her great-grandma had lived in. Two years later, she was not only interested in the town, but how it had changed since her mom photographed it prior in the 1990’s. In her Professional Practices class with Elise Kirk, Deven wrote a grant proposal for this new idea where she would return to the exact locations and positions her mom previously photographed. Her proposal was accepted and she received an Undergraduate Research Award to complete this project. Below is a selection from Passing Roots. The completed work is compiled into a book.
