I started this project with an old children's guitar. I removed the strings and added tiger's eye tiles to the sides of the guitar.
I added textured paint to the back of the neck and head of the guitar. In this picture you can also see the three rows of tiling on the sides of the guitar.
The textured paint surrounded the entire head, but I kept the fret of the guitar in it's original condition.
I inserted a quote inside the guitar that I felt represented my friendship with the bride, as well as her love for music. As is turned out, unbeknownst to me, this quote was one of her favorites.
I painted over the textured paint, using one of the bride's chosen colors for the wedding.
On the body of the guitar, I placed an outline with the tiger's eye tiles to give it a completed look. I used purple tiles to pull that color throughout the project. Around the sound hole and the bridge, I used broken pieces of two plates: a matted black plate and a black and tan plate with stripes. I made sure to create lines that allowed the shape of the guitar to be enhanced, like going with the grain.
After laying the main tiles down and allowing them to dry, I used a grout that I had mixed with a lighter purple paint.
While the grout was still wet, I placed small colored glass pieces on the sides of the guitar to give it a pop of color. They were too small to place alongside the main tiles on the base of the guitar. After letting the grout dry, I carefully started cleaning the grout off of the tiles.
After the tiles were cleaned, I then could start adding more color.
I used the same small glass pieces to create a color story on the guitar. The red at the base for the fiery earth within, deeper blues for the water leading into greens for the land of the earth. Then orange and yellows for the sun (placed around the shape of the sound hole) leading into whites and lighter blues for the sky.
Inside the guitar, I surrounded the quote with all of the colors of the glass pieces to make the inside vibrant and noticeable, and then replaced the strings on the guitar. Not intended to be used musically, but artistically completing the guitar.
The quote reads: " A friend is someone who knows the song in your heart and can sing it back to you when you have forgotten the words." - Donna Roberts
Finished piece. I loved making this piece of art. Very easy and affordable to create. Time consuming, but worth it.
