The Workshop Series

The Workshop Series was a year-long experiment in using arts and culture as a platform for political and social engagement. Four workshops led by artists, activists and filmmakers—“Multiple Truths,” “Stories from a Generation,” “The Fluidity of Symbols,” and “Accessible Advocacy”—met weekly at Townhouse from 2011 to 2012 to debate human rights, freedom of expression, the construction of historical narratives and other urgent issues now deliberated in Egyptian civil society. The results of these discussions (including short stories, films, images, performances and a pocketbook dictionary of the revolution) were presented in the First Floor Gallery and in a special series of Townhouse Publications. The caricatures in "The Pocketbook Guide to the Revolution" were illustrated by cartoonist Andeel.
