13th century Hoofdwacht - oldest building in Haarlem
This building from the mid 1200s is considered the oldest building in Haarlem, and got fully restored to its original glory in 1994 in honour of the 750th birthday of the city.

Over the centuries it has had a lot of functions: from the first city hall, to a house, printing press, beer cellar, shops, the base of Haarlem’s guard and the place they used to open and close the city gates. Its function as the base for Haarlem’s guard is what earned it the name ‘Hoofdwacht’, which it still carries today. These days it’s the home of the Haarlem Historic Society.
