The false impression that wolves are a threat to human safety is fostered by the interaction between a public that is easily and overly impressed by certain kinds of fear, and those who fabricate or exaggerate the threat that wolves represent.
Before human persecution, gray wolves occupied most of conterminous Untied States. Currently, gray wolves occupy about 15% of their former range. My goal was to design something that could help raise awareness, educate, and encourage others to spread the word.
The gray wolf is an endangered species that the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has proposed to remove all ESA (Endangered Species Act) protection for nearly all gray wolves across the U.S. After sending out a short survey I found that for the most part,
people were not really aware that wolves were an endangered species. I also found most would be likely to purchase something if they knew the proceeds would go to helping in the conservation of wolves.
I visited several wolf sanctuaries, as well as the CA Wolf Center, and the SF Zoo in conducting research on what type of wolf related items were for sale and how people received them.
I wanted my design to relay the message that wolves are a veryimportant part of the ecosystem. My thoughts were to create a scene incorporating the image of the wolf and environment that it contributes to. The above infographic breaks down the meaning of the colors and expalins the layout of the design. It also has some valuable resourced information on wolves and the political climate that surrounds them.
The final version(s) could be used in several ways, from prints, to stickers, to reusable tote bags. The message is simple and clear. Join the pack, help re-brand the wolf as a keystone species as the ecosystem depends on this predatory animal.
Above is the packaging (card stock) for the sticker design.
Along with spreading the word, all proceeds of this design go to wolf conservation, with organizations such as the CA Wolf Center, in Julian, CA.
Above is the more detailed design, as a fine print.
