Cartographers of Intrigue

Graphic Design/Illustration group project,

This was the second group project, this time to collaborate with the illustration students. Each group were given a map with a circled area to explore, investigate and document. Our group had the 'cultural' area, which included Brighton's Dome/Gallery/Theaters/Gardens, which on any nice day would have lovely sites accompanied with sounds of birds and buskers, but as it was 10 A.M on a miserable rainy derelict morning, any sense of culture was unseen.

One of the tasks of the brief was to interview people passing by (Brighton residence) and ask their experiences/memories in Brighton. Due to the weather conditions and Dome/Gallery/Theaters being closed there weren't many people around, So it didn't come to much shock that the only people willing to have a conversation with us in the rain were the homeless, who already happened to be cold, wet and had plenty of spare time.  Brighton has gained a reputation for being cool and a great weekender, but sadly has one of the UK's highest rating for homeless and drug abusers. In 2009 there was an average of almost one drug-related death every week – 50 in total, and 2010 around 35 deaths were attributed to drugs. Brighton is the drug death capital of the UK, with the highest mortality rate from drugs per capita.

Who else would know more about Brighton than the people that watch it progress and move day and night? We listened to their stories and tales which included, high and sober memories,  past experiences, life lessons and how their life ended them in the position they were in. All were men but varied in age. We displayed how a realist would portray their environment, raw and truthful.
