Project AYA is a future vision of mobility revolving around autonomous passenger drones. AYA is a drone-sharing service operating in major cities across the world, allowing people to move freely whether in relation to commuting, tourism, last-mile transport or short-term accommodation. The project focusses on exploiting the airspace of the city as infrastructure. The project includes visual identity, industrial design, website, app design, and print.
The United Nations and the European Commission both predict radical growth in urban populations towards 2050. Sustainable urbanization is a global challenge demanding a change in not only the way we settle, but in the way we move. A change in mobility. Designing for future mobility experiences, parameters to consider include sustainability, privacy, availability, safety, comfort, economy, social status, flexibility, supply-chain, amount of freedom, speed, radius, ergonomics, etc.
For the past couple of years the mobility industry has been evolving fast under the influence of a number of tendencies. In close relation to A.I., there has been a shift in mobility design, from focusing on the driver’s experience to focusing on the passenger’s experience. The tendency to automate and autonomize private and public transportation and consider the customer a passenger rather than a driver has led to more opportunities of customization. Customization is a dynamic interfering with most design areas, and Dave Gross suggests that personalization may be considered a new form of luxury: “‘We believe [customization] is the new form of luxury, which is really a return to the old form of luxury in the idea of having something made just for you […] Except with using technology, we’re able to scale that and address a much bigger market and make it accessible to more people… The phone is uniquely positioned to be at all places at all times—that’s a huge opportunity.’” (Raphael, FastCo., 2016) In the past years the amount of services revolving around ride-sharing, carpooling, car-sharing and bike-sharing has seen an increase and so have the products and services in relation to e-Mobility. Project AYA is about autonomous, on-demand, four-person electric passenger drones and may thus be regarded as a speculative design project extrapolating trends and seeking a new perspective on mobility.
