Findacure Dare For Rare Fundraising Prints
Findacure is a UK charity that is building the rare disease community to drive research and develop treatments. Their aim is to transform the world’s understanding of rare diseases and the devastating impact they have on people’s lives.
on Saturday 25th August 2018, I will be participating in the annual Dare For Rare skydive in order to raise money for Findacure. I created the following prints as a way to simultaneously raise awareness for the charity and to incentivise the public to donate via my Virgin Money Giving page. I was lucky enough to gain the support of paper manufacturer Fedrigoni during this project, who generously supplied me with the stock used for the final prints.
Each print focuses on one of the many rare disease communities that Findacure provide support for. I wanted to show the harshness and complexity of these diseases within the context of the human body so I chose to incorporate an illustration of the body-part the disease affects most. At the same time, I wanted each design to explore a different aspect of the body and, after identifying three relevant diseases, this eventually boiled down to a focus on muscle/tissue, bone, and internal organs. It also meant that the prints collectively formed a layer-by-layer deconstruction of the human anatomy.
The design started with a detailed breakdown of the human anatomy's elemental composition. I then chose an illustration and blended this within the typographic grid so that it took on a fragmented, damaged appearance - becoming part of the elemental composition. Because the area the illustration occupies is a relatively small portion of the text, I thought this was an effective way of communicating the rarity and narrow focus of each disease.
A small summary of the disease was added to reinforce the image, followed by the URL for Findacure's website and my Virgin Money Giving page.
I decided to give these prints to the general public for free with a hand written request to donate whatever they could afford. I found this interesting as it provided some insight into the act of just asking for donations vs giving something to encourage a donation.
