Glass 'Corset'
In Collaboration with Glass Artist Louise Watson
An exploration of utilising an alternative material in costume design, namely glass. This concept emerged from a previous project of exploring an alternative output for costume design. Techniques/ materials used include: metal inclusions (copper leaf/sheet/mesh, aluminium leaf, iridescent black glass, clear glass, relief, lead and sandblasting. The design and templates [not shown] were all created by myself, then executed and problem solved with Louise Watson who specialises in the medium of glass.
Q: Why glass? A: Well why not?
Front view of bodice panels and skirt panels connected using lead and then laced together through relief holes.
Close up of Front View
Side view: right hand side is the front and the left side is the back. The sides are black iridescent glass, joined together with lead for security and then laced with copper wire through relief holes.
Close up of back view: bodice and skirt are joined with lead. the back panel contains various processes: copper strip, copper mesh and aluminium leaf with sandblasting pattern over the whole area.
Initially the bodice panels and front skirt panels were to be 'holey', the areas not sandblasted were to be holes to add lightness. But for added security, full panels of glass were used instead.
